“The sultan is in good health and continuing to follow the medical treatment he has been prescribed and which with the help of God will produce the required results,” the royal court said on Oct. 2.

On July 9, Qaboos traveled to Germany on what the royal court termed a “private visit.” The 72-year-old ruler does not have children or brothers.

Diplomatic sources said Qaboos, who overthrew his father in 1970, has been battling colon cancer. They said the sultan arranged for his succession through a five-member council.

Oman has been deemed the most pro-Western of the six Gulf Cooperation Council states. Muscat, with the most modern military in the region, has also hosted NATO members.
