A People’s Daily commentary on the one-and-half-year rule of President Xi Jinping has thus characterized the Chinese strongman’s unique approach to foreign policy: alternatively using tough and soft tactics so as to close the gap with the United States as the leading arbiter in global affairs.
The extraordinary article, entitled “Chasing dream in the past 18 months: Xi Jinping’s three major contributions,” focuses on the Communist Party General Secretary and commander-in-chief’s three achievements: fighting corruption, maintaining steady economic growth and waging a vigorous foreign policy.
The commentary has confirmed Xi’s crucial role in crafting a so-called “double fisted foreign policy” by substituting late patriarch Deng Xiaoping’s “take a low profile” diplomacy with an aggressive posture particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
Examples cited to illustrate Xi’s get-touch approach include: the designation of an Air Defense Identification Zone over the East China Sea; the frequent deployment of marine vessels and jetfighters close to the disputed Diaoyu-Senkaku islands; and moving an oil rig to areas near the Paracel Islands that are also claimed by Vietnam.
