CAIRO — Egypt has delayed plans to cut fuel subsidies.
The Egyptian daily Al Masri Al Yom reported that the subsidy reduction was to have taken place before Sisi’s inauguration on June 8.
The newspaper, quoting a Cabinet source, said Egypt’s intelligence community warned of a wave of violent protests by the opposition, particularly the ousted Muslim Brotherhood.
Sources said Egypt’s new president, Abdul Fatah Sisi, ordered a suspension of plans to reduce fuel subsidies. They said Sisi wanted to re-examine the proposal and determine the timing of slashing subsidies.
“The plan will be implemented, but it’s not clear when,” a source said.
