SEOUL — North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un has pardoned thousands of officials who were punished for their connections with his executed uncle Jang Song-Thaek.
The action was taken to forestall potential chaos and encourage loyalty from the wavering ruling elite, according to media report and sources here.
South Korea’s public broadcaster KBS, citing a source at the North’s powerful National Defense Commission, reported Kim recently granted pardons of some 7,000 officials convicted for their close ties with Jang and set all them free.
“There were released as (Kim) said he would not blame their past but never forgive such a crime again,” an official at the NDC was quoted as saying by phone.
