A smuggler attempted to take a page out of Homer Simpson’s book to become the beer baron of Saudi Arabia, only to wind up saying d’oh – 48,000 times.

The smuggler was stopped at the al-Batha border crossing with the United Arab Emirates with 48,000 cans of what first appeared to be Pepsi, but was revealed to be Heineken beer after customs officials peeled back the fake wrapping.

Drinking or possessing alcohol is a criminal offense in Saudi Arabia.

“A truck carrying what first seemed to be normal cans of the soft drink Pepsi was stopped and after the standard process of searching the products, it became clear that the alcoholic beers were covered with Pepsi’s sticker logos,” said Al Batha border General Manager Abdulrahman Al-Mahna.

Al-Mahna said smugglers are always coming up with innovative new ways to hide contraband but that his men “are always ready and alert to catch” them.
