NICOSIA — Islamic rebels have conducted one of their biggest rocket attacks in Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Islamic militia attacks on at least three major Syrian cities. The British-based opposition group said the Saudi-backed Army of Islam and allied militias fired rockets on Aleppo, Damascus and Latakia.

“The bombardment resulted in death of four people at least while others were wounded, including children,” Syrian Observatory said of the attack on Damascus. “The death toll is expected to rise because there are some people who were seriously wounded.”

In a report on Jan. 25, Syrian Observatory said Army of Islam launched 53 rockets on Damascus. Many of the rockets were said to have landed near the State Security Department.

Army of Islam was also said to have launched rockets into Aleppo and Latakia. Syrian Observatory said three missiles landed in Latakia.

The rebel operations were said to mark one of the biggest rocket strikes in Syria since the civil war began in 2011. Saudi-backed militias were said to have received shipments of BM-21 Grad rockets in 2014.

“The Islamic factions launched six rockets on areas near Somareyi and Assad suburb with no information about victims so far,” Syrian Observatory, referring to the Damascus attack, said.
