SEOUL — North Korea’s young new ruler Kim Jong-Un has executed a number of senior military officers since failing to win the support he wanted from the People’s Army, despite focusing his efforts on the military since taking power in December, according to intelligence sources cited in news reports here.

The “bloody purges” have been conducted in unprecedentedly brutal methods, including by mortars, instead of by firing squad.

The new approach is by direct order of Kim Jong-Un to “get rid of” anyone caught misbehaving during the mourning period for his late father, Kim Jong-Il, the Chosun Ilbo said, citing a government source in Seoul.

One vice minister of the North’s People’s Armed Forces who had been caught drunk during the mourning period was placed at the center of artillery range where a mortar shell blew him to pieces.

The brutal method was in response to Kim’s angry orders to leave “no trace of him behind, down to his hair,” the newspaper reported.

The vice minister was one of dozens of high-level military officers executed since Kim Jong-Un took power, the newspaper said.
