S. Korea extends its air ID zone in blow to China’s anti-Japan strategy

South Korea on Dec. 8 announced the extension of its air defense identification zone [KADIZ] to cover the Ieodo rock that was under the Chinese ADIZ coverage and disputed by the two countries.

kadizChina’s Nov. 23 announcement of the establishment of an ADIZ was deemed “unacceptable” to South Korea.

President Park Geun-Hye and her national security advisors have openly stated their opposition to China’s unilateral decision and stringent rules associated with the Chinese ADIZ.

Unlike the Chinese ADIZ, the extended KADIZ will not involve any restriction on civilian commercial airline and flights.

Although the KADIZ also overlaps Japan’s ADIZ, Japan’s senior government officials did not express any opposition to Seoul’s extended ADIZ because it was done in consultation with Tokyo and would not impose any stringent rules on commercial flights and follow the international practice.
