Russian hack of White House ‘far more worrisome than has been publicly acknowledged’

Russian hackers who tapped into the White House computer system last year were able to read President Barack Obama’s unclassified e-mail, the New York Times reported on April 25, citing unnamed U.S. officials.

HackedA White House spokeswoman declined comment.

The White House confirmed last year’s breach in early April, emphasizing it did not affect classified information.

The United States has not officially confirmed reports that Russia was responsible for the attack.

The breach had been “far more intrusive and worrisome than has been publicly acknowledged,” according to the report.

Officials said the unclassified system contains highly sensitive information such as schedules, diplomatic e-mail and communications about personnel and legislation.
