U.S. revises intel on Al Qaida: Iran sent aid via Turkey to jihadists in Syria

WASHINGTON — The U.S. alert of a mass-casualty strike on Independence Day marked a revised assessment of Al Qaida by the American intelligence community.

Al Qaida is like the Internet: It can be moved anywhere as long as it contains money, communications and credibility within the Islamic world.

Osama bin Laden had his day more than a decade ago, and now new and more shadowy figures are establishing an entity that is growing throughout the Middle East and unfettered by the responsibility of statehood.

Earlier this year, the United States determined that Iran was helping transport Al Qaida fighters and funds to Syria via Turkey.

The U.S. Treasury Department said Teheran has allowed Al Qaida to run operations in Syria. Treasury identified a man termed an Al Qaida facilitator who was sending fighters and money through Turkey into Syria.
