Resolution would authorize U.S. to ‘take out’ Iran’s nuke infrastructure

WASHINGTON — A leading senator has threatened to introduce a
resolution that would enable the United States to attack Iran.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said he intends to introduce a resolution that would
enable the United States to declare war on Iran and destroy its nuclear
weapons infrastructure.

The South Carolina Republican, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he would act by the fall of 2013 unless Iran agreed to end its unauthorized uranium enrichment program.

“If nothing changes in Iran, come September, October, I will present a resolution that will authorize the use of military force to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb,” Graham said.

In an address to Christians United for Israel on July 23, Graham became the first congressional leader to call for war against Iran. A critic of U.S. sanctions policy, he said congressional authorization for war marked the last option for the United States.

Congressional sources said they doubted whether any war resolution by
Graham would make headway in the Senate. They said most of the
Democratic-controlled Senate remained cautious over any new conflict as the
administration of President Barack Obama prepared to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

“The only way to convince Iran to halt their nuclear program is to make it clear that we will take it out,” Graham said.
