WASHINGTON — Western-backed Syrian rebels have been quietly meeting with Israel, a report said.
A U.S. think tank asserted that a prominent Syrian opposition member was conducting a dialogue with the Israeli government on the Sunni revolt.
The Middle East Media and Research Institute identified Kamal Al Labwani as leading the Syrian opposition effort after receiving approval from the rebel Free Syrian Army.
“As part of his efforts to promote the initiative, Al Labwani attended several secret meetings in Germany on the matter, and has even expressed his willingness to visit Israel ‘if doing so would serve the Syrian people, peace, and the peoples of the region,'” the institute, in a report dated May 29, said.
