Report: North Korea’s execution of defense minister confirmed

Gen. Hyon Yong-chol, the highest ranking North Korean uniformed officer, was indeed executed in late April, as initially reported by the South Korean intelligence agency but has remained unconfirmed until now.

Hyon had until late April served as Kim Jong-Un’s defense minister and chief of the army.

The confirmation came from Pyongyang’s directives given to various North Korean embassies in world capitals such as Beijing, the Seoul-based newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported on June 16.

On May 12, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service announced that Hyon had been executed because he was caught sleeping when Kim Jong-Un asked him a question during a meeting.
