The Conflict Armament Research has documented ISIL’s use of U.S. light weapons and ammunition in the wars in Iraq and Syria.

In a report, the London-based organization cited ISIL’s use of U.S. assault rifles as well as anti-tank weapons.

“Islamic State forces have captured significant quantities of U.S.-manufactured small arms and have employed them on the battlefield,” the report, titled “Islamic State Weapons In Iraq And Syria,” said.

The report, dated September 2014, showed photographs of U.S. weapons found in ISIL strongholds. They included the M-16 and XM15, manufactured by FN Manufacturing and Bushmaster Firearms International, respectively.

The report, funded by the European Union, also cited U.S. ammunition seized by ISIL and other Islamic militias. CAS director James Bevan said ISIL’s use of U.S. arms point to the risk of equipping unmotivated foreign forces.

ISIL, which seized thousands of U.S. combat vehicles and artillery batteries, was also said to have used ammunition from China and Iran. The report also cited the use of foreign ammunition by Kurdish rebels in Syria.

Other U.S. weapons linked to ISIL were said to have been transferred through Saudi Arabia. The report said the weapons could have been delivered to the Western-backed Free Syrian Army and later captured by ISIL.

“M79 90 mm anti-tank rockets captured from IS forces in Syria are identical to M79 rockets transferred by Saudi Arabia to forces operating under the Free Syrian Army umbrella in 2013,” the report said.
