Some officials believe Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) may have used the PlayStation Network (PSN) to plan the Nov. 13 terror attacks in France.

The report cited Belgian Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon, who said ISIL operatives use the PlayStation 4 to communicate because it is difficult for intelligence agencies to monitor the console gaming network which has 65 million active users worldwide.

“PlayStation 4 is even more difficult to keep track of than WhatsApp,” he said.

Gaming consoles are not considered high-tech systems, but communication through the consoles is more difficult to monitor than encrypted phone calls, texts and email, security experts say.

Among the material leaked by Edward Snowden in 2013, it was discovered that the NSA and CIA created characters in on-line video games such as World of Warcraft to monitor and infiltrate suspected virtual meetings between terrorists.
