Qatar is sending 1,000 troops to join the Saudi-led coalition battling Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
A Qatari official confirmed the deployment on Sept. 8 and said the troops, armed with heavy ground weapons, were “ready to fight.”
The Qatari forces were positioned at Yemen’s border with Saudi Arabia and “should be entering Yemen in the next few days,” the official told AFP.
While Qatari ground troops are joining the battle for the first time, the country’s air force has previously taken part in the air campaign which began in March of this year.
The deployment comes after a Sept. 4 missile attack by the Shi’ite Houthi rebels killed 60 coalition soldiers, 45 Emiratis, 10 Saudis and five Bahrainis.
