ABU DHABI — Qatar has sought to rebuild Libya’s military in wake of
the fall of the regime of Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

Officials said the Gulf Cooperation Council emirate has been meeting
with the leaders of the new interim government of Tripoli. They said Qatar
has discussed significant assistance, including weapons deliveries, training
and joint exercises.

Qatari Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Libya's National Transitional Council chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil attend the "Friends of Libya" group meeting held in Doha, Qatar on October 26, 2011.

“Qatar played a major role in the revolution and now wants to give this new government every chance to attain the security it needs,” an official said.

On March 11, a Libyan military delegation began talks in Qatar on
cooperation over the next year. The delegation was headed by Libyan Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Yusef Ahmed, who met Crown Prince Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Qatar military commanders.

“All aspects of cooperation, particularly in the military field, were
being discussed,” a Qatar statement said.

Officials said Qatar also offered to help mediate between Tripoli and
Libyan militias. The interim government has sought to disband the militias and recruit at least 50,000 fighters for the new Libyan military.

The militias have demanded money, jobs and influence. Officials
said Qatar could provide aid that would bridge the gap between the positions
of Tripoli and the militias.
