Qatar draws on Pakistanis to man expanded Internal Security Force

ABU DHABI — Qatar has launched a project to expand its security
force amid threats by Al Qaida and Iran.

The Internal Security Force has won approval by the Interior Ministry to
construct facilities for the training of thousands of new officers. ISF
plans to construct a camp outside Doha that would include hundreds of
buildings for administration and training.

ISF has sought to recruit Qataris for security assignments. So far, the
lion’s share of officers in the police and security forces have been
foreigners, many of them from Pakistan.

The ministry has awarded a contract for the camp to Qatar Project
Management, the first company in the Gulf Cooperation Council emirate
designed to administer large construction projects. Under the contract, QPM
would oversee the construction of the ISF camp at Al Duhail, scheduled for
completion by 2017.

Under the project, Al Duhail would contain 330 units over an area of
four million square meters. Officials said the project, the amount of which
was not reported, was expected to be completed in five years.
