In a meeting with members of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Putin said the 13 energy states must link gas prices to those of oil as well as continue long-term contracts.

The forum contains 60 percent of known gas reserves.

“We must jointly resist illegal pressure and more effectively defend the interests of gas producers and suppliers on international markets,” Putin said on July 1.

The Russian president also urged GECF members to revise their approach in an effort to increase exports.

GECF, which includes four observer countries, said it would support indexing gas prices to oil to “ensure fair
prices and the stable development of natural gas resources.”
