Power struggle between Kim’s top two aides noted by North Korea watchers

SEOUL — The bitter rivalry between Hwang Pyong-So and Kim Wong-Hong, two of North Korea’s most powerful leader under Kim Jong-Un, has emerged in the wake of fierce competitions to win much-needed foreign currency.

The power struggle between Hwang, the country’s top military leader in charge of the powerful General Political Bureau of the People’s Army, and Kim Wong-Hong, the head of the spy agency of the State Security Ministry could affect Kim Jong-Un’s leadership, analysts say.

Hwang has directed the Security Command of the People’s Army that oversees military espionage operations to investigate Kim Wong-Hong’s son Kim Chol for “embezzlement of foreign currency and disturbing economic order,” according to the New Focus, a Seoul-based online news outlet run by defectors from the North.

Kim Chol was suspected of tapping his father’s power to sell mineral resources to foreign buyers at cheap prices to earn foreign currency.
