ATHENS — Greece has acquired a weapons cache left over from the
former Libyan regime of Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

Officials said the Libyan embassy in Athens transferred a large amount
of weapons and explosives to Greek authorities.

Greek counterterrorism officers on Feb. 21 were examining dozens of heavy weapons and explosives confiscated from the premises of the Libyan Embassy in central Athens.

Police said the Libyan arsenal was comprised of two submachine guns, 30 pistols, two hand grenades, 1,200 rounds of ammunition and 15 kilograms of plastic explosives.

“They followed instructions from the government of Libya to its embassy in Athens,” a Greek government statement said on Feb. 21.

Most foreign embassies store firearms, ammunition and emergency equipment to handle any assault. But officials said the Libyan embassy was probably one of the only foreign outpost in Greece with a large amount of explosive material and detonators.

“Some of the plastic explosives might have been transferred to
terrorists in Greece or other parts of Europe,” an official said.

Officials said authorities received the Libyan cache on Feb. 20. They said an investigation was launched on whether the Libyan embassy or anybody
else used the weapons in insurgency operations.
