Palestinian opposition to Hamas regime revived as Egypt cracks down in Sinai

GAZA CITY — The Palestinian opposition has been revived in the
Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

A Palestinian youth movement has announced plans for a campaign against
the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip. The movement, “Rebel Against Injustice,”
was established amid an Egyptian crackdown on Hamas and Palestinian militias
linked to attacks in the Sinai Peninsula.

“Those who carry resistance rifles must stop pointing them at their own people and stop scaring them, stabbing them, betraying them and trading their pain,” the movement said.

On Aug. 18, the movement said it would mobilize massive demonstrations against Hamas. The campaign against Hamas and the umbrella Muslim Brotherhood — termed non-violent — was meant to peak on Nov. 11.

“They have practiced fraud in the name of religion and resistance, declaring themselves as believers while they labeled us as disbelievers,” the movement said.

In 2011, the Palestinian opposition, including the ousted Fatah movement, staged massive rallies against Hamas. Hamas was said to have responded with the arrest and detention of scores of suspected opposition organizers.

Rebel Against Injustice said Hamas was engaged in torture and
corruption. The movement said Hamas would be ousted by the end of 2013.

“We will not ask you to leave because you are part of us even if you
exterminate us,” the movement said. “All options are open to us except arms
because we are different from you. It is you not us who would point their
guns at their brothers.”

On Aug. 24, the opposition group issued its second video. The statement
denied accusations by Hamas that Rebel Against Justice was sponsored by
Egypt.

Hamas has also shut down media outlets in the Gaza Strip. The Mada press
rights group asserted that the closures included the bureaus of the
Palestinian news agency, Maan, and the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya satellite
television. Hamas has accused these outlets of incitement.

“We hear some calling for rebellion and action and so on,” Hamas Prime
Minister Ismail Haniyeh said on Aug. 21.
