ABU DHABI — Oman plans to build a massive facility to service oil tankers in the Gulf.

Iran-Strait-of-HormuzThe Oman Supreme Planning Council approved a project to build a logistics hub in the central Gulf Cooperation Council sultanate.

The council said the complex would encompass 90 square kilometers near the two entry points of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz, dominated by Iran, has been used by up to 25 percent of global oil shipping.

Over the last few years, Iran and Oman have cooperated in Gulf maritime security as well as oil exports.

Officials said the project, announced in April 2014, was meant to help diversify Oman’s oil-based economy.

The officials said the logistics hub could also enhance protection of the Strait of Hormuz as well as the Gulf of Oman.
