The U.S. Navy said an MV-22B Osprey suddenly lost power over the Gulf, Middle East Newsline reported. Two Marines ejected and one of them, identified as Cpl. Jordan Spears, was killed.

“Cpl. Spears went into the water Oct. 1, when the aircraft he was aboard appeared to lose power and descended to the surface of the ocean shortly after takeoff from USS Makin Island,” the Navy said on Oct. 3.

The statement marked a rare acknowledgement of a technical issues with the V-22, produced by Bell Helicopter and Boeing.

The Navy, which did not specify the mission, has issued several explanations of the accident, first saying the V-22 lost power during take-off in the northern Gulf.

“The Osprey’s crew was participating in flight operations in support of its current mission at the time of the mishap,” the Navy said. “The Navy and Marine Corps will investigate the cause of the incident.”
