WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has approved a request by the
United Arab Emirates for U.S. bombs that could destroy Iranian military
bunkers.

The Obama administration has informed Congress of a UAE request for 600
BLU-109 air munitions. The BLU-109 has been described as a 2,000-pound bomb
meant to destroy underground command posts and munitions depots.

Under the request, the UAE would receive 600 BLU-109s as part of a
larger sale worth $304 million that would include the Joint Direct Attack
Munitions, or JDAM.

Congress agreed to the sale.

Officials said the UAE would use the BLU-109 for the emirate’s F-16
fleet. The JDAM would provide a global positioning system that could allow
the BLU-109 to reach its target from up to 25 kilometers away.
