Turkey gave no warning before shooting down a Russian Su-24 fighter jet on Nov. 24, the surviving Russian pilot said.

Turkey said its F-16s shot down the Russian Su-24 near the Syrian border after repeated warnings, reportedly a total of 10, over air space violations.

The pilot said on Nov. 25 that there were no warnings and his aircraft did not fly over Turkish air space, Russian news agencies reported. Moscow said it could prove the jet did not leave Syrian air space.

A second pilot of the Su-24 was confirmed killed.

Moscow warned of “inevitable consequences” for the incident and both countries suspended military cooperation.

Turkey’s Anadolu Agency showed video footage of the two pilots parachuting out of the Su-24 before it crashed. A Syrian rebel group sent a video to Reuters that appeared to show one of the pilots badly wounded on the ground and an official from the group said he was dead.

While U.S. President Barack Obama said he supported Ankara’s right to defend its sovereignty, CBS news quoted anonymous U.S. officials as saying Turkey overreacted to a minor violation of its air space.
