No joy in Pyongyang over Park’s win in South Korea’s presidential election

SEOUL — Pyongyang’s favored candidate lost with the victory of conservative, anti-communist ruling party candidate Park Geun-Hye in the recent presidential election here.

The destitute North openly endorsed Park’s rival, opposition contender Moon Jae-In. Moon had promised to resume massive economic aid and cross-border projects with the North that would provide Pyongyang with much-needed cash.

The North said Moon would promote progress in inter-Korean economic relations if elected. The North denounced Park as a “disaster” who would produce “all sources of misfortune” for Koreans.

But Park, the nominee from the ruling Saenuri (New Frontier) Party, was elected South Korea’s first woman president promising to take a “carrot-and-stick” approach towards the North. She is scheduled to take office in February 2013.
