The ongoing talks on revising the U.S.-Japan defense guideline, which will be finalized by the end of this year, heralds progress towards the globalization of Japan’s military presence.

Japan has recently lifted its self-imposed ban on collective self defense which means that from now on, the Japanese defense forces will be able to take on combat roles in support of its allies under attack by a third party.

That was initially understood to mean that the tens of thousands of U.S. troops and assets deployed on Japanese soil such as Okinawa and Yokosuka, plus American military personnel in Japan’s nearby area such as the Korean Peninsula and East and South China Sea will be jointly defended by American and Japanese troops.
