The European Council has elected Donald Tusk, Poland’s prime minister, as its new president.
Tusk, 57, who traces his political roots to the anti-communist Solidarity labor movement in the Soviet era, is the longest serving prime minister in the post-communist Poland.
The prime minister is known for his hawkish views on Russia and his harsh criticism of Putin’s infringement in Ukraine. Tusk has been prime minister since 2007, surviving several key challenges in Polish domestic politics.
His candidacy for the top EU job was strongly supported by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron, who normally don’t see eye to eye on EU affairs.
