SEOUL — The surprising expulsion of young North Korean asylum-seekers by the Laotian government was a result of Pyongyang’s aggressive diplomacy under leader Kim Jong-Un, sources here said.

The nine North Korean defectors, who are believed to all be orphans and aged between 14 and 18, made their way to Laos after escaping from their homeland last year. They were arrested in Laos on May 10 for illegal border trespassing.

Pyongyang swiftly dispatched its agents to the scene. More than nine North Korean agents flew the nine youngsters via China back to North Korea on May 27.

South Korean diplomats based in Laos also moved to get them and called for talks the Laotian government, but received word that the refugees had already been turned over to the North Korean Embassy in Vientiane. The next day the nine were put on a plane for Beijing where a Pyongyang-sent Air Koryo flight was ready.
