N. Korean artillery forces poised for repeat attack on S. Korean border islands

SEOUL — North Korea has “concentrated” its artillery forces on the southwestern coastal border, positioning them for an imminent attack on South Korean border islands.

The actions were taken in response to the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises, defector sources and officials here said.

The 4th Corps shelled a South Korean border island, Yeonpyeong, in November 2010. The attack killed four South Korean marines and civilians and wounded more than a dozen others.

It was the North’s first attack on South Korean inhabited territory since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.
