Mystery surrounds sudden death of PLA top auditor, from Chengdu

The sudden demise of Lt. Gen. Ruan Zhibo at the relatively early age of 62 has triggered wide speculation in China over whether his death was tied to the recent maelstrom within China’s top political and military leadership.

That’s because Ruan was deputy commandant of Chengdu Military Region, one of China’s seven military command zones in charge of military affairs in southwest China including the epicenter of the ongoing political earthquake, Bo Xilai’s home turf of Chongqing — only a stone’s throw from Chengdu.

Ruan was also the PLA’s top accountant, having served as the chief auditor during his previous tour in Beijing.

Bo Xilai was widely known for his “economic problems” and financial irregularities. By some accounts, he had amassed assets approaching $1 billion.

As the top political figure in southwest China, Bo Xilai also was a close friend of the top military figure in the region, Gen. Zhang Haiyang, the powerful political commissar of the Chengdu Military Region.
