Port Said has been the target of several attacks in recent years.

The officials said Akram Shaer was captured in Saudi Arabia in cooperation with Interpol, while Mohammed Qabouti was arrested in Kuwait.

“They are alleged to have committed terrorism, violence and inciting the killing of citizens,” the Egyptian prosecutor-general said.

In a statement on March 12, the prosecutor-general identified Shaer as a former Brotherhood parliamentarian from Port Said. The statement did not say how Shaer reached Saudi Arabia.

Officials said Qabouti and Shaer planned attacks on police stations in Port Said in wake of the military overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi in July 2013. They said the post-Morsi government sought Interpol’s help in locating the two Brotherhood leaders.

Hundreds of Brotherhood operatives fled Egypt in wake of the coup against Morsi. Officials said many of the operatives were hosted by Qatar, the only GCC state to maintain open support for the Brotherhood.
