Moscow fears new war threatens deal; Exiled Yemen president blasts ‘stooges of Iran’

As Saudi-led air strikes hammered the Iran-backed Houthi rebels advancing in Yemen, Russia’s chief negotiator at the Iranian nuclear talks in Switzerland said Moscow hopes fighting in Yemen does not jeopardize the talks.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov assessed chances of achieving a deal are “more than 50/50.” but said the Gulf Arab states offensive had changed the atmosphere at the talks.

Meanwhile, at the Arab League summit in Egypt on March 28, Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi accused Iran of destabilizing his country and blasted Houthi rebels as “stooges of Iran.”

Hadi was speaking only days after being forced into exile by the militants’ advance on Aden where he fled after being driven from the presidential palace in the capital city Sanaa.

He charged Iran’s subterfuge in Yemen could ignite a full-scale regional war.

Iran and the Houthi rebels deny Iran’s complicity in the fighting.

Saudi officials said 86 foreign diplomats and other officals had been shipped to safety from Aden.

In Sanaa, the United Nations said most of its 100 international staff have been evacuated, and airport officials said more than 200 other foreign workers and officials had taken flights to Ethiopia and Djibouti.
