CAIRO — The military adviser of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has resigned in protest.

Gen. Sami Anan said he quit his post as military adviser to Morsi. Anan said his resignation was in solidarity with the massive campaign to oust Egypt’s first Islamist president.

In a statement, Anan, who had served as deputy chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, called on the military to support the people and their demands. He said the military marked the model of sacrifice and patriotism.

Anan’s resignation, joined by four Cabinet ministers, came amid a military warning for Morsi to respond to the demands of the opposition. On July 1, the Army gave the president 48 hours “to respond to the people’s demands.”

On early July 2, Morsi’s office rejected the military’s ultimatum.

A presidential statement said Morsi, who earlier spoke to U.S. President
Barack Obama, would continue efforts for what he termed national
reconciliation despite military intervention.

“The president of the republic was not consulted about the statement
issued by the armed forces,” a presidential statement said.

“The presidency sees that some of the statements in it carry meanings that could cause
confusion in the complex national environment.”
