Morocco dismantles Al Qaida cell linked to militias in Syria

CAIRO — Morocco has reported the capture of an Al Qaida cell.

The Interior Ministry said security forces dismantled a cell sponsored
by Al Qaida Organization in the Islamic Maghreb.
2706The ministry said the cell was directed to target government facilities in the North African kingdom.

“Those recruited were connected to Al Qaida rebels in Syria,” an official said.

The ministry statement, released on Aug. 16, said the dismantled cell consisted of at least four members. The ministry said the AQIM cell was working with Al Qaida militias in Syria.

“The police have dismantled a terrorist ring, composed of four members, active in the cities of Tiznit, Fez, Taounat and Meknes,” the official Moroccan news agency, MAP, said.

Morocco, which reported the dismantling of 260 cells over the last
decade, has become a leading target of AQIM.

So far this year, the Interior Ministry reported the dismantling of four Al Qaida cells, two of them in May.
