Morocco has condemned an Iranian report that accused the North African kingdom of engaging in an “Israeli agenda.”

Mustapha El Khalfi, a Moroccan government spokesman, said “Rabat strongly rejects any abuse directed at the kingdom, regardless of its source,” adding that “regardless of the intentions and pretexts for the abuses directed at the country, they are rejected and unacceptable and must be condemned.”

Meanwhile, Moroccan authorities have announced a conservation and renovation project for the ancient medina of Marrakech and the Jewish quarter, known as Mellah.

The project, which will be financed by the Ministry of Housing and the Urban district of Marrakech, will include renovating public squares and reconstructing buildings and neighborhoods.

Surrounded by fortified high walls, the Jewish quarter was built in the 16th Century during King Moulay Abdallah’s reign. Since the founding of Israel, most Jews have left the Mellah but it remains a popular historical tourist attraction.

El Khalfi was referring to a report in the official Iranian Fars news agency that was entitled “Morocco prisoner to Zionist policies”.

El Khalfi added that “Morocco is a sovereign, free, independent country that exercises its policies and sovereignty in accordance with the constitution that frames the state and is not subject to the dictations of any other party. Just as Morocco does not interfere in the internal affairs of any country, it firmly refuses to allow any other party to interfere in its affairs.”

Fars, the media agency of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, published the report a day after Morocco’s King Mohammed VI appointed Mohammad Taqi Moayyed as Rabat’s new ambassador to Iran.
