CAIRO — Morocco has arrested a suspected cell of recruiters for the war in Syria.

The Moroccan Interior Ministry said three people were detained on charges of recruiting and financing young Muslims to fight the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

“They will join the ranks of Al Qaida-linked terrorist groups in coordination with elements active in the Turkey-Syria border region,” the Interior Ministry said.

In a statement on May 26, the Interior Ministry said two of the detainees were arrested in Fez. The third suspect was captured in Mirt and accused of financing Al Qaida militias in Syria.

Officials said the suspects were in coordination with Al Qaida militias in northern Syria near the border with Turkey. They said the detainee arrested in Mirt was believed to have sent tens of thousands of dollars to the militias through pirating bank cards.

This marked the second suspected Al Qaida recruitment cell dismantled in
Morocco in as many months. Morocco, with recruitment of more than 2,000
fighters, was said to have become a major source of foreign fighters for the
Sunni revolt in Syria.
