Kosmos Energy said it will plug and abandon its well in the Cap Boujdour permit area offshore Morocco after gas and condensate was found, but not in commercial quantities.

Kosmos CEO Andrew Inglis said however the results were positive, proving a working petroleum system.

“While not a commercial find, this first well in the [frontier Laâyoune] basin has significantly de-risked further exploration by demonstrating a working petroleum system, including the presence of a hydrocarbon charge, as well as effective trap and seal,” he said.

Kosmos has had rights to conduct exploration in the Cap Boujdour permit area since 2006 under an agreement with the government of Morocco.

Kosmos operates the Cap Boujdour license with 55 percent equity and is joined by its partners ONHYM (25 percent) and Capricorn Exploration and Development Company Limited.

Kosmos Energy Ltd. operates as an oil and gas exploration and production company focusing on under-explored regions in Africa. The company’s asset portfolio includes the existing production and other major project developments offshore Ghana, as well as exploration licenses with significant hydrocarbon potential offshore Ireland, Mauritania, Morocco and Suriname, and onshore Cameroon.
