A popular Chinese language web site reports that the authority of Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Hu Jintao is being challenged following the recent power struggle surrounding the ouster of Politburo member Bo Xilai, who was accused of harboring ambitions to control the PLA and preparing for a rumored coup.
China’s political system provides an absolute guarantee of supreme authority to Hu, who is also chairman of the supreme military high command, the Central Military Commission.
It was therefore alarmingly abnormal for the PLA Daily, the mouthpiece of the People’s Liberation Army to headline a special report on April 6 stressing that Hu should be in charge of the PLA.
