President and Commander-in-chief Xi Jinping has orchestrated a large-scale loyalty campaign to ensure the success of his anti-corruption measures in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Military authorities announced early this week that Lt.-Gen. Gu Junshan will shortly appear before a military court for corruption-related charges. A former deputy chief of the General Logistics Department, Gen. Gu was in charge of infrastructure and housing projects within the defense establishment.
Gen. Gu’s patron, former Politburo member and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, Gen. Xu Caihou, is also under investigation for pocketing bribes from senior officers including Gen. Gu.
This is despite rumors that ex-president Jiang Zemin has been putting pressure on Xi not to touch Gen. Xu, who is deemed a Jiang protégé.
