NICOSIA — Lebanon has reported the construction of Israel espionage
facilities.

Officials said the Lebanese intelligence community has determined that
Israel was operating several spy stations along its northern border with
Lebanon. They said the facilities were monitoring telephone and mobile
communications deep in Lebanon.

“This is a violation of national sovereignty,” Lebanese
Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui said.

Officials said the spy stations were situated along Israel’s 70-kilometer border with Lebanon. They said the largest Israeli facilities were located opposite the Lebanese areas of Al Abad and Jal Al Alam.

“It has become clear that the stations Israel built close to the border allow it to receive everything that passes through the air, from waves and vibrations, to tapping of telephone cables that are above ground,” Sehnaoui said.

Israel has not confirmed the Lebanese allegations. But Israel has asserted that the Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah, with an estimated 60,000 missiles and rockets, was in control of the area from the Lebanese border
with Israel to Beirut.

The Lebanese parliament has been briefed of the Israeli facilities. A
parliamentary committee was scheduled to discuss the Israeli operations on
Nov. 11.

“No respectable country would accept these spying stations along its
border, which is a clear, blatant violation and requires action on all
levels to confront it,” parliament’s Telecommunications Committee chairman
Hassan Fadlallah told the A-Safir daily on Nov. 7.
