Kuwaiti emir breaks ice with Iran, signs energy agreements

ABU DHABI — Iran and Kuwait, holding their first summit in decades, have been examining the prospect of energy cooperation.

Officials said Kuwait’s Emir Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah discussed energy cooperation with Iranian President Hassan Rowhani on June 1.

The discussions took place during the emir’s visit to Teheran, in which six cooperation agreements were signed.

“They can exchange expertise and coordinate in the field of the
extraction, marketing and refining of oil,” Kuwaiti Oil Minister Ali Al
Omair said.

Officials said Iran could serve as a supplier of natural gas to the Gulf
Cooperation Council sheikdom.

Al Omair said the two sides could reach agreement on Iranian gas exports.
