Kurdish insurgents strike Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline

ANKARA — The Kurdish Workers Party has been accused of targeting
Turkey’s energy sector.

The 960-kilometer Iraq-Turkey pipeline carries about a quarter of Iraqi oil exports

Officials said PKK fighters blew up an oil pipeline from Iraq to Turkey
in the second such attack in as many weeks.

The officials said the bombing was part of a PKK offensive in which at least 115 of its fighters were killed by the Turkish Army over the last two weeks. A PKK cell is said to have claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The explosion of the pipeline on late Aug. 5, near the southeastern town of Midyat near the Iraqi border, targeted one of two facilities that transport a combined 25 million tons of crude oil a year to Turkey.

Officials said the second line, which runs parallel to that bombed, was also shut down.

Turkey’s state-owned Botas has been assigned with the repair of the
pipeline at Midyat. Officials said the facility was expected to be restored by next week.
