Kim Jong-Un uses fireworks as propaganda to show ‘bright future’ ahead

SEOUL — North Korea’s youthful leader Kim Jong-Un has used expensive fireworks to “show off” to the people the “bright future” he wants them to think his leadership will bring, sources and officials here said.

Despite its chronic economic troubles, the North put on a massive fireworks display to mark New Year’s day and other political events, which cost millions of dollars every year, a government official said.

As late as April 15, the North staged a grand fireworks show in Pyongyang to mark the birthday of Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il-Sung, who died more than two decades ago.

The North’s state-run Korean Central Television broadcast the 15-minute extravaganza live, which took place on the banks of the Taedong River that runs through the showcase city.
