Kim Jong-Un seen using ailments for PR in sign of continued instability

SEOUL — North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un had surgery on his ankles but used his six-week absence from the public eye to monitor moves by his potential rivals and grab international attention, sources and analysts here said.

Kim is now using his return to public view as part of efforts to craft his image as an “ardent and benevolent” leader who cares about people despite his ailments, they say.

“This shows Kim is still struggling to win [popular] and his status remains unstable,” a government source said. “Kim seems not fully recovered, but he had to hurry to show himself in public eyes because of possible internal instability,” he said.

The 31-year-old leader was out of view for 40 days after attending a music concert with his wife on Sept 3. The unexplained absence fueled speculation about his health with rumors . . .
