Kim Jong-Un completes generational shift in the top military leadership

SEOUL — North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un has put the final touches on his year-long drive to reorganize the powerful military by replacing aged defense minister with younger loyalists.

The sweeping generation shift that affected dozens of key posts is likely help Kim put the military under full control, but could spark a backlash from dismissed army officers, sources here say.

It has been confirmed that Jang Jong-Nam has recently replaced Kim Kyok-Sik as the minister of the People’s Armed Forces.

Jang was introduced by Pyongyang’s state media on May 13 as new defense minister during the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Korean People’s Internal Security Force that was attended by Kim Jong-Un and his wife Ri Sol-Ju.
