LONDON — Jordan, long regarded as one of the most stable regimes in the Middle East, has lost control over much of its territory.

Western intelligence sources asserted that the Hashemite kingdom has undergone a rapid decline over the last year amid the civil war in neighboring Syria. They said Jordan has become a hub for rebel operations against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, with a huge foreign presence in both the north and south.
“King Abdullah has watched helplessly as foreign elements take over much of the country, dragging Jordan in a war that he doesn’t want,” an intelligence source who monitors the kingdom said.
“The king has always been pro-American, but over the last two years, he’s seen the United States consistently turn its back to its friends, while promoting a hostile Brotherhood,” another source said.
