Jordan unleashes Sunni fighters against Assad forces, offers safe haven for Syrian refugees

NICOSIA — Sunni fighters from Jordan have launched attacks on the
regime of President Bashar Assad and the kingdom has reportedly offered safe haven to Syrians fleeing the government’s crackdown.

Opposition sources said Bedouins from Iraq and Jordan were conducting
strikes on the Assad regime in Syria. They said the Jordanian Sunnis were
focusing on southern Syria while the Iraqis targeted Assad forces in
the central Syrian province of Homs.

A leading U.S. think tank reported that Jordan was establishing camps
for Syrians fleeing to the Hashemite kingdom. The Hudson Institute said Jordan’s
support for the Sunni revolt could prompt an attack by the Assad regime.

“The Jordanians are now in the process of setting up refugee camps along
their border with Syria to absorb Syrians fleeing from Assad’s murderous war
machine,” Hudson said in a report.

“The Bedouins are becoming more involved in the struggle against the regime,” an opposition source said.

On Nov. 24, at least 25 officers of Syrian security forces were killed in gun battles, mostly in Homs. In Huleh, 11 Syrian Army soldiers and security troops died in fighting with rebel forces, most of them deserters.

“Eleven soldiers and members of the security forces were killed in skirmishes.” the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The opposition said the Bedouins from Jordan were bringing weapons, communications and other supplies into Syria. They said many of the fighters came from Bedouin tribes in southern Jordan while the weapons were procured
around the northern Jordanian city of Irbid.

The Syrian Observatory also reported the death of 15 rebel fighters, all
of whom identified as army deserters, in Rasan. The opposition group said
Syrian Army units used heavy machine guns against the rebels.

On Nov. 26, the Syrian Observatory said at least 10 Syrian soldiers were
killed in fighting during the previous day. In all, the opposition said 47
Syrian soldiers were slain since Nov. 24.

The rebel Free Syrian Army has also reported operations in Homs. The
rebel force, which claims 20,000 fighters, said a bus with Syrian Air force
pilots was attacked and seven officers were killed. Later, the Syrian Army
confirmed the attack and the casualties on Nov. 24.

“An armed terrorist gang murdered six pilots, an officer and three
junior officers working for the military air base,” the Syrian Army said.

On Nov. 25, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said about 100
Syrian Army soldiers have fled to the kingdom. Earlier, Jordan reported the
arrest of 550 people who infiltrated from Syria.

“They have taken refuge in Jordan as individuals,” Judeh said.
