Israel: Iran ordered Hizbullah attacks on diplomats to retaliate for killing of nuke scientist

JERUSALEM — Israel has determined that the Iranian-sponsored
Hizbullah bombed diplomatic targets of the Jewish state.

The bombings on Feb. 13, denied by Teheran, took place amid an Israeli
alert of an imminent Iranian-sponsored attack in Asia.

Police investigators examine an Israeli Embassy vehicle in New Delhi on Feb. 13 after a bomb wounded several people.

Officials said Iran was seeking to avenge the assassination of a nuclear scientist in January as well as to commemorate the killing of Hizbullah operational chief Imad Mughniyeh in 2008.

Officials said Iran directed Hizbullah to carry out bombings against
Israeli diplomats in Georgia and India. In New Dehli, two people, including the wife of an Israeli diplomat, were injured when the vehicle exploded. The bomb in Tbilisi was discovered before detonation.

“There was one attempted attack and one successful,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Paul Hirschson said. “In both cases, the people concerned worked with the Israeli embassies.”

On Feb. 14, Bangkok, another Asian capital that was the subject of
Israeli and U.S. alerts, was rocked by two bombings attributed to an Iranian national. A Thai government spokeswoman said the Iranian was carrying a bomb
when it exploded and one of his legs was blown away. Four other people were
injured.

“They are intent on sabotaging the Israeli way of life and operating
against Israelis all over the world,” Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak
said.

Officials said the previous bombs were placed on or underneath the
Israeli vehicles by a motorcyclist. In Tbilisi, an Israel embassy driver, a Georgian
national, discovered the bomb after he heard something suspicious during the drive.

“In all those cases, the elements behind these attacks were Iran and its
protege Hizbullah,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
